The Yearning was born on Saturday mornings, when Ali and Meg would sit together and watch PEN15 on a tired IKEA couch somewhere in Brooklyn. Conversations about PEN15 turned into conversations about Buffy which eventually turned into conversations about…everything. We’re two queer writers who care deeply about how our stories are told and depicted in this world.

We hope we can be a resource to you - whether you need a movie night recommendation or want to read an impassioned rant about how two women looking longingly at each other onscreen a few times isn’t enough.

Who are we?

Hey and welcome! I’m Meg Steinfeld-Heim (she/they), a writer, filmmaker and long walk enthusiast living in Brooklyn, NY. I work in film and television as a freelance assistant and associate producer—over the last four years I’ve worked on POSE, Madam Secretary, Search Party, and too many Dick Wolf shows to count. I’m working towards writing, directing and producing movies and television that will be seen by a wider audience than my mom and partner (fingers crossed!). But for now, I’m a bit of a backseat director. I often have a lot—definitely not too many, though—opinions on queerness in media. Like, exactly the right amount of opinions I think :) The Yearning felt like the right place for me to expand on those opinions and push them on all of you! Thank you for supporting our gorgeous bouncing baby girl, TY.

Hello there! I’m Ali Romig (she/her), a writer, editor, and crusty-white dog apologist based in Brooklyn, NY. During the day, I edit middle grade and young adult fiction and nonfiction, and I’ve published essays and short stories in print and online magazines, including The Writer. While books are my bread and butter, I’ve long been entangled in an unhealthy obsession/love affair with television and film—some may say it’s unrequited, but I certainly feel held. After a few years of spending night after night parked in front of my TV, over-analyzing the media I was consuming out loud to no one—but in a fun, gay way—I thought, maybe it’s time to put proverbial pen to paper. The Yearning is my baby, born from this love affair—I told you it was requited—and I am so glad you’re here.
