What Would The Yearning Watch: November 2024
An announcement + what’s new and queer on screen this month?
We’re officially in the holiday season, Yearners! To celebrate, we’ll be taking the month of November off to hunker down with our personal projects (some might call this NaNoWriMo), so unfortunately you won’t see a new review from us until December.
But to hold you over, take a look at the amazing new queer media coming out this month. We’ll catch you in the colder weather!
As a reminder, if you are a free subscriber, you will only see a preview of this month’s WWTYW. Paid subscribers have access to the full fantasy—including the ability to vote on what we write about <3
New in November
Chasing Chasing Amy (November 1)
What’s it about? Chasing Chasing Amy explores the transformational impact of the ‘90s cult classic on a 12 year old queer kid from Kansas, coming of age and to terms with his identity.
Gay, in what way? This was possibly Joey Lauren Adams’ best role, so I get it. For young Sav Rodgers, the Kevin Smith cult classic became a life raft. As Rodgers examines the film and its making as a cornerstone of LGBTQ+ cinema, he finds himself at a complicated crossroads.
Where to watch? In theaters
Arcane League of Legends Season 2 (November 9)
What’s it about? This animated, video-game inspired series set in Riot's League of Legends universe follows sisters Vi and Jinx as they find themselves embroiled in a developing conflict over clashing convictions and arcane technologies.
Gay, in what way? Season 1 of the show was described as unapologetically queer, yet didn’t commit to establishing a relationship between Caitlyn and Vi (voiced by Haliee Steinfeld, aka gay Emily Dickinson). Maybe this will come in Season 2???
Where to watch? Netflix
Emilia Pérez (November 13)
What’s it about? Jacques Audiard’s film is about a Mexican lawyer who is offered an unusual job: help a notorious cartel boss retire and transition into living as a woman, fulfilling a long-held desire.
Gay, in what way? This film stars Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez and has been described as “cis nonsense” in early reviews. So take from that what you will.
